The Edo (1603-1868)

A Flourishing Art for All

After the capital moved from Kyoto to Edo in 1603, Japan entered the golden age of Wagashi. This period, known as the Edo era (1603–1868), Wagashi experienced a golden age. Prior to this capital relocation, in the late 16th century, Sen no Rikyū established the spirit of wabi-cha, making the tea ceremony with matcha a significant aspect of Japanese culture and this development influenced the evolution of Wagashi, which became an integral part of tea ceremonies.
